Looking towards one entrance to Royal City Centre. Sushi restaurant on the left corner, bank on the right side corner.

Camo

Photobucket

Another disguise for the power / telephone boxes that are usually a dull grey. This one is located in Moody Park, near the swimming pool.

Moral

Photobucket

Painted on the playground of Lord Kelvin Elementary. Something to think about whilst playing hopscotch.

Whimsy

Photobucket

Portion of a painted wood cut collage mural artwork on the side of Lord Kelvin Elementary School. Typically, schools have painted wood cuts attached to the chain link fences surrounding the school yards to jazz them up a bit. This school just took it one step further!

Sentries

Photobucket

On guard at many street corners are a pair of these: post box and relay box. The relay box is where the trucks leave the next mailbag of post for the posties to pick up mid-route. The post boxes have one of two paint jobs: the maple leaf design seen here, or one covered in the first half of various post codes from across the country. I haven't yet found one of those in New West.

Out of Season

Photobucket

This design caught my eye as I was walking past. Wish I could have got a little closer, but the fence blocked my way. No way I'd want to be swimming in the water currently in the bottom of this pool!

Vert

Photobucket

Stumbled upon this big green monster in Moody Park today. The moss is shockingly green in reality.

Nuts

Photobucket

Caught this little guy snacking up a tree in Queen's Park. Squirrels everywhere, chittering away.

Verandah

Photobucket

Not so much in winter, but in summer, verandahs are a blessed thing. Apartment balconies just cannot compare.

8th Street, heading downhill towards the river on a late Sunday afternoon.

Saintly Sunday

Photobucket

Mount Cavalry Lutheran Church is located on 6th Street just south of 8th Avenue. It's a multipurpose church, as you can see by the Korean lettering down the corner - it also holds the Orthodox Reformed Church, a rather ominous name. This is a common thing here in Canada, for many varieties of churches to share a building, probably brought on by declining attendees and increased property taxes.

The Other Half

Photobucket

This is the other half to the sign posted yesterday. In between these two halves is a map of the high school, but itself was not very photogenic.

Welcome

Photobucket

One half of the welcome sign at New Westminster Secondary School. On either side of the map of the school near the main entrance are these signs, offering welcome in the languages spoken by the students of the school.

(I can't speak for the other languages, but there are small errors in the Russian...)

Wood you?

Photobucket

A departure from the typical New Westminster house is this striking modern one. Most houses around here are in a Victorian, Queen Anne or Arts and Crafts style. This one is actually flanked by two more traditional styles of home. I wonder if it's as modern inside as it is outside?

Slush

Photobucket

The coast was hit with a blizzard last night, with up to 25cm falling in some areas. By morning, it was already above 0C and raining, turning all the snow into slush. It was a slipsliding sort of travel day until everything was beaten down. Here's the view of the gas station at the corner of 8th and 6th, as I was walking past earlier this evening.

Arts

Photobucket

The Massey Theatre is currently part of a design dispute, along with the high school located next door. For some reason, the powers that be believe the two need to be knocked down and rebuilt; however, no one can come to consensus on the how and why and who will pay for it. For what reason did society get away from architecture that was both beautiful and built to last? (Not that I find this the most fascinating architecture.)

History

Photobucket

This is one of two mural-like paintings hanging on John Robson Elementary School. I love the quirkiness and the odd scale of each of the parts of the painting.

Smothered

Photobucket

When English Ivy attacks.

All joking aside, this plant is a major problem in local forests adjacent to urban areas as it does to live trees what it's doing to this dead one. Up, up, up, then down comes the tree. It thrives here and chokes out everything. There are groups that go out and do ivy pulls and broom bashes (pulling up the invasive Scotch Broom) to try to keep these pests in check.

Salmon Pink

Photobucket

One of the many beautiful houses in the Queen's Park area of town.

С Рождеством!

Photobucket

A photo of City Hall in its holiday frippery, in honour of Orthodox Christmas. It's also a nice reminder of what blue sky looks like, as the past few days have been decidedly dreary grey and rainy.

Please

Photobucket

We Canadians are very polite, even when setting rules. This rule is a good one, as it's a 10m drop down the other side of that wall to the pavement.

Geometry

Varied roofline and materials making up Douglas College's campus at 8th and Royal.

Ugly Duckling

Photobucket

I am convinced that this is the ugliest building in town. It's a hotel that offers rooms at the economy price of $600/month, should you want one. The liquor store that's open Sundays and holidays is its only redeeming quality. It is located next to City Hall, a somewhat unfortunate location.

Apparently the beautiful blue sky of the past days' pictures shall be replaced by snow and/or rain as early as this evening. Nothing like traffic chaos as students return to school and adults to work!

Due East

Photobucket

View eastward on Royal Avenue, from the intersection with 6th Street, in front of City Hall. You can see tiny remnants of the snow that fell last Wednesday, but hasn't completely melted due to the slightly subzero temperatures of the last week. To the middle of the photo and right is a church I posted a few months ago - St Peter's, with the glowing red cross on the top of the tower.

To the right and downhill is the Fraser River and the New Westminster Quay; to the left and uphill are places like Royal City Centre, and the city of Burnaby.

Periscope up!

17 June 2010

Of all the photos I -posted- during the first calendar year of New Westminster Daily Photo's existence, this one is my favourite for the colours: the pale boat, the ominous sky. It's part of a children's play park down at New Westminster Quay.
