Giant Animals

Photobucket

Especially important in today's world of near total city and digital living are education centres, such as the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre. Everyone needs to learn about nature and humanity's role in it (not over it; the correct preposition is important).

Wild

Keeping black bears away form human areas is difficult when said human areas are in the bears' area.

Something Spooky

Photobucket

After work tonight a friend and I visited Potter's Haunted House, a yearly event where a local nursery builds an elaborate haunted house that scares the bejeezus out of everyone who enters.

Beware the chestnut tree! Nearly got conked on the head as I walked past.

Soak in the View

Photobucket

Beautiful view from the edge of the cranberry field. The mountain off in the distance is the very tall Mount Baker, in Washington State (USA). It's about 3200m tall, and is a (not very) active volcano.

The Separator

Photobucket

After travelling through the long pipes, the cranberries and water are separated as they are pushed upwards towards this contraption at the top of the shipping container loaded on the back of a truck. I think I heard that this container holds something like $30 000 worth of cranberries.

Cranberry Travels

Photobucket

After the cranberry boom part of the process, the cranberries and water travel through this tubing along the dykes in the field to reach the final stage: the sorter and shipping truck. Stay tuned!

Cranberry Boom

Photobucket

It was the annual Fort Langley Cranberry Festival today. To celebrate, I visited the Fort Wine Co and got to see part of the cranberry harvest in process. The cranberries are being sucked into a pipeline that runs them to the loading truck, after which they will be taken to the winery and made into delectable cranberry dessert wines.

Rumour has it, this cranberry bog is haunted by a ghost!

Stormin'

Love the light. Blue sky on one side, storm clouds on the other. There's mountains buried under those clouds!

Guerilla Gardening

Photobucket

Gardening project created for unfortunate apartment dwellers who cannot convert their backyard into a food making centre. This one is near Joyce SkyTrain Station just across the border from Burnaby into Vancouver. There are quite a few of these around, making good use of what is essentially wasted space.

Standing Guard

Photobucket

These stumps always look like faces to me. The grooves were cut to place boards for the loggers to stand on as they sawed through metre upon metre of tree.
