Permit me the indulgence of this shot. While at an outdoor education workshop I was using a 10X magnification loupe to investigate the smaller side of nature. This is a photograph I took while studying the bark of a tree. Fantastic!

These metal poles at the Surrey Nature Centre were also photographed back in November, but until today I had no idea what they were about. Apparently, they are a teaching tool that shows students (sort of) how birds nests are constructed.

This building was featured last summer when still covered in scaffolding. It was given a makeover from an ugly 1970s style facade to this one, of the "old is new" style. Much better.

Adjacent to the New Westminster SkyTrain Station - or should I say UNDER the SkyTrain tracks, is the concourse for the other portion of the mall shown in yesterday's post.
Again, I doubt that this will become a gathering place for people. The day I was there it was dark and had a wind-tunnel effect going on.

It will be interesting to see how this space develops as more businesses move in and final details are completed.

Missed Opportunity #1

The closer it gets to completion, the more I dislike Plaza 88. Monolithic malls are no way to create community and encourage people to gather along a city street. This part of Columbia sees pretty much no foot traffic and I feat it won't in the future. Missed opportunity by the city and developer to create something positive at this corner.

City Daily Photo Theme Day is for the Photo of the Year 2011. As New Westminster Daily Photo often leaves New Westminster, I have decided that in choosing the photo of the year I would limit myself to a photograph actually taken within the city limits.

This brings me back to Glenbrook Ravine Park and this beautiful little garden, a bit of manicured beauty amongst all the wilderness.

Snapped this picture yesterday as today this football stadium will be used for the annual Grey Cup match. When I got home and read the news, I found out that there were reports of leaks in this $563 million structure. I'm sure the government could have found much more important places to spend that much money. The stadium staff have already struck for better wages and working conditions. How having pro sports teams became a symbol of a city's prosperity is beyond me.

This artwork addresses the primal power of life. Five huge granite slabs that transition from sharp to jagged to worn resemble a zipper that is being opened.
