Spotted this wee urban garden as I was walking past an elementary school. Looks like a fun project, and that people have left it alone.

Annexe

A typical problem in most elementary schools is too many students and not enough classrooms. It seems the space needed is always underestimated. The solution? An annexe, or two, or five. These are the nicest detached classrooms I've seen at any school.

If you squint, at the very left of the photo you can just see the top of a snow-capped mountain, and at the right you can see a lower mountain with only trees.

This sign is found outside all schools in New Westminster. I often wonder if parents heed this advice or just wander over to the door leading to their child's classroom, since most of these classroom doors open to the outside (see previous post for photo).

Portion of a painted wood cut collage mural artwork on the side of Lord Kelvin Elementary School. Typically, schools have painted wood cuts attached to the chain link fences surrounding the school yards to jazz them up a bit. This school just took it one step further!

In, Out, About

After a morning of snow, the sun came out and melted most of it. I took a late afternoon walk in the crisp, cool, sunny weather and ended up back at the high school. This is the door to the Pearson wing of the high school (name after former prime minister of Canada, Lester B Pearson, I assume).

Hit the Books

John Robson Community School at 8th and Royal. I love the little rotunda on the roof!

John Robson was the owner and editor of the British Columbia newspaper from 1861 to 1868. During this time he campaigned for free, non-sectarian education for children. In 1883 he was elected to the provincial legislature, and in 1889 became the eighth premier of British Columbia until his death in 1892.
