Bloomin' Good Weather

With a spring in my step, New West Daily Photo returns! What gorgeous weather this weekend. However, the 7-day forecast is rather gloomy.

Small World

Permit me the indulgence of this shot. While at an outdoor education workshop I was using a 10X magnification loupe to investigate the smaller side of nature. This is a photograph I took while studying the bark of a tree. Fantastic!

Nesting

These metal poles at the Surrey Nature Centre were also photographed back in November, but until today I had no idea what they were about. Apparently, they are a teaching tool that shows students (sort of) how birds nests are constructed.

Forest Humour

According to a tourism brochure procured on the ferry, this guy is named "Smilin' Man", and visitors are challenged to find him as they walk the Killarney Loop Trail.

Ending and Beginning

Where the road ends, the trail begins. Beginning the ascent to the summit of Mount Gardner (762m) on Bowen Island.

Zipper?

According to the artist's statement:
This artwork addresses the primal power of life. Five huge granite slabs that transition from sharp to jagged to worn resemble a zipper that is being opened. Carefully selected trees with various growth speeds and root-ball size have been planted adjacent to the stones, giving the viewer the time-lapsed impression of powerful forces so apparently at work in the canyon below.

These stumps always look like faces to me. The grooves were cut to place boards for the loggers to stand on as they sawed through metre upon metre of tree.

River's Edge

A typical sight along the Fraser River are bleached out trees that have spend many a day floating the river, being battered by the sun's rays and the waves.
