Pipe and Drum

Sometimes the most interesting things are going on in the local parks. As I was walking past, I heard a pipe and drum band. This isn't a rare occurrence in a parade or other special event, but this group just appeared to be practicing in the park instead of inside. Perhaps it's a sign of just how desperate everyone around here is to enjoy the sunshine when it happens!

Good food

Fantastic treats were found at the Royal City Farmers Market today. Ciabatta bread, chocolate hazelnut butter, artisanal cheese, cookies and for supper: pulled pork and citrus slaw soft tacos. My stomach is very, very happy.

Layers of colour make the cannon at New Westminster City Hall seem less ominous.

A photo of City Hall in its holiday frippery, in honour of Orthodox Christmas. It's also a nice reminder of what blue sky looks like, as the past few days have been decidedly dreary grey and rainy.

Due East

View eastward on Royal Avenue, from the intersection with 6th Street, in front of City Hall. You can see tiny remnants of the snow that fell last Wednesday, but hasn't completely melted due to the slightly subzero temperatures of the last week. To the middle of the photo and right is a church I posted a few months ago - St Peter's, with the glowing red cross on the top of the tower.

To the right and downhill is the Fraser River and the New Westminster Quay; to the left and uphill are places like Royal City Centre, and the city of Burnaby.

Freedom

Time, time, time

Near the entrance to City Hall is this time capsule, buried in the ground. It was buried in 1961, place by then mayor Beth Wood, and is to be opened in 2061.

The cover reads: Contains material relating to the centennial year records of the City of New Westminster.

Cosmic

This is the Cosmic Maypole, a totem pole on the grounds of City Hall. The inscriptions says that it was created for Habitat Forum in 1976 by artist Georganna Malloff, and was erected in 1980.

Sisters

Sister city agreement was signed in 1991. New Westminster's other sister cities are Moriguchi, Japan, and Lijiang, China.

Fodder

Once again outside City Hall, looking eastward towards one of two cannons mounted in the front yard.

Tim

Fountain monument dedicated to local New Westminster resident "Tim".

Zigzag

In the Japanese garden near City Hall is this little bridge that crosses the pond. As with most Japanese garden architecture, the straightest path is not what is important. This little bridge is just wide enough for one person to zigzag their way to the other side.

Regiment-ed

The Royal Westminster Regiment Historical Society and Museum on Queens Avenue near City Hall. The Royal Westminster Regiment is an active Army Reserve battalion, with units currently stationed in Afghanistan.

This is the regiment after whose mid-19th century soldiers the world's largest tin soldier at the New Westminster Quay was designed.
